Remember the I Made You Look trend? The one that goes:
I could have my Gucci on
I could wear my Louis Vuitton
But even with nothin' on, bet I made you look (I made you look)
To be honest, I’m happy not all trends are useless and that’s a good thing. I feel Meghan did a thing with that song for real. By a thing, I mean returning an essential piece of ourselves - confidence - that society has long stolen from us through the projection of unrealistic beauty standards.
Some days ago, I saw a video on Reels where this lady cut her hair off (I’m talking skin-low) and trashed all of her makeup items. She captioned it as “when you don’t feel beautiful without makeup anymore”. Well, more power to her because honestly as simple as it might look to some of us, I feel it is a big step towards change. At first, I was going to scroll past quickly and thank my eleda I’m not a makeup person so I'm not at risk of getting attached to it. Then, I remember how I most likely won’t step out of my house without my lips lined and glistening with gloss. I remember how if I forget to put on my earrings, and I leave the house, I feel awkward. REALLY awkward. So, I juried myself and passed across my judgment.
You know what I love most about the I Made You Look Challenge, it’s the part where it is acknowledged that though with all these you look good, without them you still do.
Yeah, I look good in my Versace dress (take it off)
But I'm hotter when my morning hair's a mess
'Cause even with my hoodie on
Bet I made you look (I made you look)
Mhm-hm-hm
I think this is what my mother has been drilling in my ears each time I stop midway on our strolls to run back to the house and get my earrings or whenever I gloss my lips too shiny and she asks me to kiss the wall. I always want to roll my eyes (I’m sure I did) whenever she goes “You’re naturally beautiful”. Of courseeee, I am to you Ma, thank you.
Anyway, may the oil on Meghan’s head never run out, may her creative juice never dry, and may all the girlies and boyies learn that with and without the Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, you still can make the whole wide world look and if they don’t, then what?
Reading:
I'm deliberately hoarding my current read today because I discovered that once I share a book I’m yet to be done with, chances are it’d remain in that category. There is a theory for this, but that’s a story for another day.
I read this article titled ‘Growing Up’ by Khloe Umoh. I think it’s insightful and I know the lady is admirably brilliant.
Watching:
Marmalade: I saw this movie on one of those days where I just needed a show that’d grip me with seriousness. I’m not sure if it failed or succeeded, it was giving double standards.
Big Love: I didn’t like the movie. Kinda like the acting, liked bits and pieces of the movie too but generally it was tacky for me. The casting didn’t do it, the chemistry was anywhere but in the room, the plot wasn’t it. I’d generously rate it a 4/10.
Happy new month, beautiful people. I pray you have a Marvellous May. If this post made you look, don’t forget to like, share and subscribe.
As soon as I saw Meghan Trainor in the title I had to double-look, Lol. Meghan is gifted in letting folks know that beauty goes deeper than the surface, it's her truth. God bless your heart for bringing to our remembrance that our value/worth shouldn't come from without rather it should be from within. 🧡
